Ectopic
An ectopic pregnancy is where the young developing child in the first few days of life attaches somewhere other than the mother’s uterus (womb) such as a fallopian tube, ovary, or abdominal cavity. The greatest danger in an ectopic pregnancy is death of the child and severe blood loss that can be potentially fatal to the mother.

If the child has died, the doctor may remove the child or provide chemicals to help dissolve what is left of the placenta and amniotic sac of the deceased child. If the child is still living, the mother and child may be monitored through expectant management. [1]

While abortion is widely prescribed for ectopic pregnancy, the condition may resolve itself. Children in an ectopic pregnancy may die at only a few weeks old or have been known to reattach from a fallopian tube into the abdomen where they can find enough nutrition to grow. These children may be born early or may be delivered by C-section. There are reportedly more than 500 children who have been born who were carried ectopically and both mothers and children have survived. A doctor in the 1980's reported that he had successfully transplanted a child from an ectopic pregnancy into the mother's uterus, and there is currently a doctor interested in attempting transplant. [2]

If a mother takes the abortion pills without medical supervision so that an ectopic pregnancy goes undiagnosed, taking the abortion pills while experiencing an ectopic pregnancy, she can hemorrhage to death. [3]

When treating preborn children inhumanely to cause their intended premature death becomes a thing of the past, we may find more ways to save these children's lives while also preserving the lives of their mothers. To address ectopic pregnancy with something other than aborting a living child requires patience for the parents and medical team or a willingness to risk pushing current medical limits.

The current amendment before the state of Colorado allows that if a medical emergency arises where either the life of the mother or the life of her child is in jeopardy for whatever reason - including an ectopic pregnancy - medical personnel may triage patients and will attempt to save all lives wherever possible.
